Mass suicide near Grand archives?

Just defeated the Dragon slayer armour, and Went for the titanite chunk right past the bonfire, and i noticed that theres a ton of bloodstains showing the players just jumping straight over the railing. I'm just wondering, why? Just why? Is there items or is it a glitch point?
