Finding accommodation in Europe?

I will be staying at London, Paris, Rome and Venice. Trying to look for cheap places to sleep. The cheaper accommodation is further from central areas, I was wondering if its worth it to pay a bit more and stay central or be 30mins to 1 hour away from central and save money?
