Fear of being ostracised

Possible Trigger

Sorry in advance if the title is misleading.

Recently I've been noticing a trend, or belief, among some people in the community that if you're friends with people who also happen to support Trump (Not everything he does though, referring to how he treats us, so hold your downvotes), you are branded as a traitor and shunned.

Here's the thing though, as mentioned above, this couple of friends of mine do not condone Trumps actions against us. They're simply the types that believe he was a better choice financially over Hillary. Not saying I agree with them, but that's their thing.

Fast-forward to my local LGBT group, we were talking about daily things when friends come into the equation. One thing led to another and I said I have two great friends who support Trump. They instantly see this as an affront and tell me to stop seeing them. I tried to explain to them that these guys are cool, but they saw my defense of them as me supporting their confidence in Trump. Needless to say, most of them weren't happy with that. I'm not kicked out or anything, I'm just peeved that I've been branded as something I'm not (Trump supporter). I simply want to have as many friends with differing beliefs and perceptions on certain events and situations to mine as possible so that I can form educated opinions on certain events.

How does that make me a villain?

I apologise if this came across as ranty (reading back over it yeah, it kind of is) and messy. I'd appreciate if anyone else who's been caught in a similar situation could give some input. Thank you in advance.

*Edit:*Thank you all for the feedback, despite pretty much all of them being negative. Will take it into account
