Calling All Professional Trainers: Recommendations for Continuing Education?

help

Hello fellow trainers, I'm looking for some information on continuing education for myself. While I'm happy teaching basic obedience classes, I'm wanting to expand and head towards athletics and behavioral rehabilitation. While I've also worked in the veterinary field for 8 years, there is limited opportunity for behavioral and training CE there (it's kind of overwhelmed by all the other medical stuff), making it difficult for me to reach my long term goal of LVT with a specialty in behavior. I've found some information, but would like input from others' experience to help determine what is and is not worth my time/money.

I know there will be many who think, "Why don't you just reach out and ask other local trainers?" I live in an area where the profession is dominated by PetSmart, PetCo, and a VERY territorial CPTD-KA that does not allow shadowing, does not mentor, and touts herself as a behavioral specialist. I've previously worked for PetSmart, who did not encourage my continuing education (hence why I left, you'd think they'd want to encourage someone to learn more about methods they follow to bring more business, but whatever), and thus I am reaching out to other professionals through here.

Karen Pryor Academy: While I've heard wonderful wonderful things about Karen Pryor, I have to ask: is her $5,000 tuition worth the education she provides? Not to mention that there are travel costs on top of the tuition because of the seminar(s)! From all that I've read from the descriptions of her coursework, I'm concerned that I already have essentially all of the same information and experience, making such a costly investment void (I already have a diploma from Penn Foster in dog training that was 1/10 the cost of KPA and had very similar, if not identical, information minus the hands-on work). I would love to hear from any KPA graduates or current students about this!

Tellington TTouch: I've also heard good information regarding this kinesthetic/massage technique helping in behavioral modification in addition to some other benefits. Again, this particular certification is rather pricey, however I would (at some point in several years) like to open my own business incorporating such things into the practice to care for the pets mind, body, and spirit (holistic approach) while working in conjunction with veterinarians for dogs that may need medication during the start of behavioral modifications to get them to the point of being well managed and medication free for behavioral problems. I'm having trouble finding information on this method without having to go through a very pricey course to get it. Any recommendations on books about it or even from anyone that's learned about it/is certified?

Athletics: For this I'm looking more for books or other reading material, as there is only one athletic trainer in my area and our schedules are polar opposites, thus shadowing is not an option.

Please feel free to list authors (I already have Dr. Sophia Yin's books), titles, webinars, etc. Thank you in advance for your help!
