The "Nothing Happened in Volume 4" Rant

DISCUSSION

#DISCLAIMER I am not trying to blindly defend CRWBY with this post. People should continue to express their problems with the show so that it can improve. However, this argument frustrated me, and I decided to make a post stating my opinion.

That being said, I'm getting VERY sick of people downright insulting people for thier opinion, or in the case of lazy people, just blindly downvoting anything they disagree with. I do not want the next 8 months here to be half arguing and half shitposts. If this thing keeps up (on both sides!) then I might make a seperate post against that.

##Anyways, onto the rant

sigh I didn't want to make this . . .

✓ Let out a sigh

✓ Say you didn't want to make this.

✓ Have rant in the title

Alright, now that I can officially call this a rant, let's talk about my least favorite argument against Volume 4.

"Nothing happened in Volume 4!"

Alright. You're entitled to dislike Volume 4. Hell, you're entitled to hate it and everything that Miles and Kerry do. But when you're making an argument, at least make one that makes sense.

Nothing happened in Volu-WHAT DO YOU MEAN NOTHING HAPPENED IN VOLUME 4? I would argue that Volume 4 had the MOST happen in it besides the 2nd half of Volume 3.

I'm going to go over everything that happened in Volume 4.

-We established THREE new villains. The only other Volume to have done this is Volume 2.

-The dynamic between team RNJR was established.

-Jaune got an upgrade.

-We met Weiss' family.

-We got bandit set up for the future, along with Nuck foreshadowing (honestly without this and the Chapter 6 scene, the Nuck would have been kinda sudden).

-We got concert setup.

-We saw how Jaune is coping with Pyrrha's death.

-Blake met up with Sun.

-We saw hints of angry Salem, a new grimm, and Cinder's treatment.

-We saw what Yang's PTSD is doing to her.

-We FINALLY got to see Raven, and got some explanation on where Raven and Qrow came from.

-We met Blake's parents.

-We got hints at Ren's past so his development will feel natural.

-We got the concert scene, along with Weiss acting out. AKA setup for her leaving.

-We got RNJR vs Tyrian. RNJR has now had confrontation with the bad guys, which would be weird if they didn't. Also, Qrow.

#HALF WAY POINT!

So this is the first half of Volume 4. I know what you're saying. "This was all set up!" Well...duh. In case you haven't noticed by now, this is how RWBY has always been. The first half of Volumes sets up for events either in the Volume or in the next few Volumes. For instance....

-Volume 2 had Blake angst and Arkos. Blake angst set up for Mountain Glenn stuff with Blake and the White Fang, while Arkos developed so that Jaune could grow from Pyrrha's death. Hell, we had a food fight take up half of Chapter 1. While awesome, not plot essential. But that's good. We need a breather through a cool fight at times. Same thing with Volume 4 fights like Blake and Sun vs the Sea Dragon, and RNJR vs the Geist.

-Volume 3 had half of the Volume dedicated to cool fights. We met Qrow and Winter, and got to know them a bit, but besides that, you could argue that nothing happened.

-And good ol' Volume 1 had the formation on teams RWBY and JNPR...across 8 episodes. Yes, it was still enjoyable to watch. But that's all that happened along with some foreshadowing. Very important quite obviously, but so is everything that I've covered so far in Volume 4.

tl:dr on the first half It has always been set up.

#ONTO THE 2ND HALF!

-Weiss got punished. Whitley is the heir. This is what pushes her to finally escape, and who knows what Whitley being heir will mean in the future.

-Qrow. Vs. Tyrain. This fight besides, being FREAKING AWESOME, was plot important. Qrow had to be out of commission for Ren to Qrow by facing that grimm. Qrow is a trained huntsmen. If he was still around, the Nuck would be fucked. ^^^I'm ^^^sorry That, and Ruby feeling guilty because of what happened. Oh, and Jaune's upgrade. None of this could have happened if Tyrian didn't poison Qrow.

-Chapter 8. Despite me not liking it too much, we learned SO MUCH. We learned about some arguments between Blake and her parents in her past, we saw Illia, we learned about FREAKING GODS AND RELICS, and, of course, we learned about Qrow's semblance. Soooo much happened in this episode.

-We saw Yang's growth after week's of training.

-Weiss finally managed her full summon.

-Illia was fully introduced, Sun got injured, and Blake got the scroll.

-We got Ren and Nora backstory, Ruby guilt, and Renora moments. all this is one bullet point, but this was the key episode for Ren and Nora development. They needed this growth, and they finally got it.

-We got to see how Salem treated Tyrian's failure, and how truly insane he is, along with checking in on Cinder.

-Weiss broke out.

-Yang left home.

-Blake finally decided to fight back and take back the White Fang.

-We had RNJR vs Nuck. Which gave:

-Ren and Nora development.

-Jaune sword upgrade.

-Renora confirmed.

-Qrow and Jaune making up.

-Okay. Putting the fight aside, RNJR MADE IT TO MISTRAL!

-And the Volume ends with a beautiful Ruby monologue to tie up all these story lines so they can connect in Volume 5.

#HERE'S A TL:DR FOR THIS ENTIRE POST

RNJR: Lots of world building. Ren and Nora finally developed. Some coping. AND A TRECK ACROSS THE CONTINENT WITH TWO COOL FIGHTS!

Weiss: Establish her family and force her to break out, stronger than ever.

Blake: Menagerie gives WF info, and convinces Blake to fight back.

Yang: Started out broken by PTSD. Grew out of it with help from adults. Set off to Mistral.

Villains: Team WTCH, you know, THE MAIN ANTAGONISTS, got establishment and interactions.

OH YEAH, AND OSCAR: During all this a farmboi got a wizard in his head and set off to the city. He's going to be very important in Volume 5 for show, especially since he's with Qrow.

#COMPARED TO OTHER VOLUMES

Volume 1: RWBY and JNPR meet and form teams. Ruby and Weiss bicker but then are cool. Cardin's a racist bully, and Arkos development. White Fang, Sun, and Blake backstory established.

Volume 2: New villains. Blake dealing with struggles that her team helps her with. Yang backstory. Dance for Arkos. RWBY goes to Mountain Glenn and fails to stop Torchwick, Breach is pushed off.

Volume 3: Tournament happens. Qrow and Winter established. Fall maidens established. Yang framed. More Arkos. Penny dies, beacon falls, Kevin wakes, Yang loses an arm, Velvet's a confirmed plagiarizer, Ironwood and literal iron, Adam's an edgelord, Ozpin's dead, Pyrrha's dead, SALEM, and Qrow's a crow.

So besides the end of Volume 3, RWBY has generally been a lot of set up and execution. This is not new to Volume 4. Volume 4 moved the plot from despair to hope. It also established a LOT of important events, and gave some much needed development.

I won't stop you from having your opinion, but a LOT happened in Volume 4. Saying "nothing happened" when comparing Volume 4 to the other Volumes doesn't make much sense.

....Wow, I spent an hour on this. I have no life.
