What's the automotive rust situation? When did the area stop using corrosive salt in the winters?

Moving to the area this summer, and will be looking for a classic car project sometime shortly thereafter. How's the rust situation? Wondering if it's better to buy in the area or pull a Roadkill style shopping trip in Southern California.
