Gear as payment?

I need some wage negotiation advice.

I’ve done one short with a local production company and they’re asking me to work on their feature length. They’ve got a $50K budget, a few D level actors and a couple pro level MMA fighters. I’ve got only a handful of projects for experience with my H6, NTG2 and two rodelink wirelesses (stock lavs) kit.

Any money I make would go back into gear, so I’m wondering if I should/could ask for them to buy gear (Zoom F4/NTG3/B3’s?) that I would use and keep after the production. I know they’ll be giving out tax forms so not sure how that’d work. We’re in Sacramento, CA so no easy access to rental houses but we do have a few local full time freelance professionals they could use instead of me.

Ps - I could provide way more specific info but I wanted to keep this short and on a topic others might be interested in.
