What grinds my gears: Weed as an ultimate replacement for pain medication.
So I was watching a fairly amusing rant about oxycontin addiction by John Oliver and I liked the public awareness he brought up. Then I made the mistake of looking at the Youtube comments and it's baffling. Just look at some of the shit people post:
yeah, just legalize weed and ban opiods and this entire problem would be solved cause weed isn't very addictive, harmless, and is pretty good pain killer, where as opiods are just as bad as heroin and should be banned
And this lovely piece (note the desperation):
we should ban all opiods for medicine because they are just medical heroin, and then just fully legalize weed, UGH this story makes me so angry I need some weed now, ANY WEED DEALERS IN OHIO PLEASE TELL ME WHERE YOU ARE
This is stupid. Marijuana has been shown to help with a variety of pain conditions and symptoms, but it's not an all inclusive solution to pain management. People with some types of chronic pain will get nothing out of weed or, even worse, it will actually make them more hyper aware of their pain and increase it. It's great that people are starting to understand the issues of pain killer abuse better, but I'm tired of all these loser stoners walking around like pretend doctors saying, "Oh you don't need that vicodin Grandma, just smoke some weed." I remember when I had an abscessed tooth and I was in extreme agony, weed wasn't helping. Second I went to the ER and was given a hydro, my pain washed away. What I'm trying to say is this: weed has a place in pain treatment and the same extends to opiates.
I don't know, does this grind anyone else's gears?
