When should bloodwork be done?

I have spent 3 months on mtf HRT and my physician says blood tests aren't currently needed.

I've heard that it's important, especially in the beginning, to have your hormone levels checked for safety and efficacy. How often should blood tests be done?

Besides looking at my hormone levels, is there any other care I should make a point to ask for?
