The Long Haul: An American Samoa Story

So, this has been done with Madden several times and I wanted to see if I could do it with College Football Coach. A sort of "Franchise". I'll be creating story lines to follow what happens in game. The School that I'll be using is the infamous American Samoa. Wish me luck. I'll be writing from the perspective of a reporter at the school news paper.

Football on its Way Out?

Football is seen as an escape on our island. A way to escape poverty and maybe, just maybe, make the NFL and create a better life for a young player's family.

According to an anonymous alumni source, the American Samoa Football Program may at be cut altogether, ending a long standing tradition of football at the school. Lack of recent success in the W-L column was cited as the main reason for the possible closure of the football program. Perhaps new head coach Shaun Standings will put a spark into this much maligned team. The school's athletic director could not be reached for comment.

Season Preview

With a new coach in tow, let's have a run down of the team that Mr. Standings is inheriting.

Offense

Quarterback

Terry Arnold (SR), Edward Rice(FR)

With an above average arm, albeit with not very much accuracy, Arnold is the heart and soul of this offense. For 2 years Arnold guided this team through loss after loss, his big play ability being the only positive aspect of the last two seasons. Despite being a great leader, Arnold doesn't have the talent, the exception being his arm, to be very effective. Combine this with his injury history and we could be seeing freshman Rice sooner rather than later in the season. Rice is very, very raw but has a lot of upside. We'll see if he ever reaches that upside.

Running Back

Starters: Long Miller (JR), Adrian Harvey (FR)

While not very talented, this group is young and full of potential. Their development is paramount to the improvement of a lacking run game.

Wide Receiver

Starters: Steven Wallace (SR), Dennis Bortles (JR), Carl Wilson (SO)

Wallace, best friend of Arnold and the main target of the quarterback for the past two years. The talent around him is not very good.

Offensive Line

Starters: Damon Kelly (SR), Alan Zimmerman (JR), Wardell Powers (SO), Ben Rivers (FR)

Not a lot of talent here. In fact, this unit is the weak spot of the offense. Coach Standings should make this group his first priority.

Kicker/Punter Tim Griffin (FR)

Griffen is a new face around campus and will provide a very below average duty to the offense and defense. He has alright potential, however.

Defense

Safety

Starter: Lee Fischer (SR)

An average starter, serviceable but will be graduating at the end of the season. In fact, that describes most of the defense, which is actually the "strong" point in a weak team.

Cornerback

Starters: Brady Wong (SR), Spike Ellis (SR), Jason Stewart (SR)

Front 7

Starters: Russell Gonzalez (SR), Edward Turner (SR), Joshua Crawford (JR), David Fisher (SR), Steven Brady (SR), James Bailey (SO), Marvin Myers (JR)

Preseason Prediction: 1-11, this is gonna be a long season.
