NES Advantage joystick into a musical instrument

This is my first project and have no experience with coding outside of HTML. I'm trying to turn my vintage NES advantage controller (the one with the joystick) into a musical instrument, either through sampling a library or having live manipulation. I have a Pi 2 model B and a library of sounds. Is this possible?
