[Breeds] Help finding a dog breed

Introduction

1. Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?

• Yes, but I have had a range of pets beforehand. Just never one that would require this level of attention.

2. Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?

• I do not mind either.

3. Describe your ideal dog.

• I would like a dog that had medium/low energy and likes to be cuddled. A dog that is more suited for an apartment would be better and one that would not mind me going to work for the day (8hrs). I want a dog that can handle multiple tricks and likes to learn but also wouldnt mind going on hikes. It would be great if I had a dog that did not shed, I dont mind buying sweaters for the doggo.

4. What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?

• I have none in mind. I want a doberman in the future but I understand that this is not be the first dog I own. I thought of Shibu Inus and I like everything but I would prefer a dog that is not as prone to being mouthy.

5. What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?

• Sit, heel, speak/bark, wait for treats, stay, shake paws, and to come back when I ask him to.

Care Commitments

6. How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?

• about 2 hrs in the morning and 4/5 after work.

7. How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?

• I do plan on visiting the dog park at least 3 times a week. I go on morning runs and I would like to bring a buddy with me which generally goes for about 2 miles. In the afternoon I like to go on long walks, but I dont mind passing time throwing a frisbee and playing catch instead.

8. How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?

• I am willing to brush as necessary, ideally I would not like a dog that sheds a great deal. I would prefer to do these at home than pay. Regardless, id like a short haired dog.

Personal Preferences

9. What size dog are you looking for?

• Medium to large but not a great dane.

10. How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?

• Shedding - ideally little, barking - a normal amount (?) but no howling at all times. slobber - little.

11. How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?

• Somewhat important but not a concern. I would prefer to have my dog leashed at all times.

Dog Personality and Behavior

12. Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?

• Snuggly

13. Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?

14. How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?

• I would like my dog to bark should there be someone yet I want to train them to sit or stop when told.

15. Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?

• ...Ideally this is something that I would like to avoid, so no. I want to train and socialize my dog not to be this way.

16. Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?

• Overly Jealous of me. I want my dog to understand that it will be the only dog and that there is no need to freak out. Regardless I understand this is also training.

Lifestyle

17. How often and how long will the dog be left alone?

• The time period of which I am at work. I would like to cage train but, I do intend on finding a dog walker to come in and walk my dog for at least an hour.

18. What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?

• I live with my SO of which we both agree upon everything I am saying here. My SO also intends on sharing responsibilities

19. Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?

• 1, Sulcata tortoise, but he lives in his own space.

20. Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?

• No.

21. Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?

• Rent. There are no weight or breed restrictions.

22. What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?

• I live in Ithaca, NY. There are tons of green places to go hiking. There are no laws that I was able to find.

23. What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?

• Summer 85 F, Winter 15 F
