Call your legislators about SB0948, which criminalizes private loans and transfers of long guns

Use this to figure out who your state reps and senator are. It's a State Senate bill, so that's the more immediate issue as opposed to your delegates: http://mdelect.net

Call them. The tool above gives you their phone number. Phone calls count a lot more than emails. I called my senator's office and the person answering the phone actually knew what I was talking about and engaged me in a detailed back-and-forth for 10 minutes.

These are the state senators on the committee that can kill this bill before it gets to the floor for a vote: http://mgaleg.maryland.gov/webmga/frmMain.aspx?pid=cmtepage&stab=04&id=jpr&tab=subject7&ys=2017RS

Common sense reasons to oppose this, which you can explain to your senator:

  • Private transfers are already illegal in Maryland for handguns. So this affects only long guns. Let's take stock of the problem: can the bill's supporters tell us how many crimes are committed each year in Maryland with a long gun that was privately transferred between two non-felons? The answer is fricking zero.
  • So what do we get in exchange for preventing zero crimes? Criminalizing thousands of hunters every year who loan a shotgun to a hunting buddy for a weekend.
  • This also hobbles the future of hunting and shooting sports in the state, by criminalizing the gifting of a shotgun to your kids. Also criminalizes recruiting new hunters by letting them borrow your gun if they want to compare theirs to someone else's.
  • Did you go on a hunting trip in Maryland and your gun breaks on the first day? This bill wants to make it a crime for your buddy to loan you his gun, so congratulations, your only two options are a) become a criminal or b) scrap your whole trip.
