The Iron Sheik has some words for you

Hello everyone, the name is Clay, aka CBSA82, aka the guy who won’t stop believing. And I am here to talk to you about WWE 2k17, the GREATEST WRESTLING GAME OF ALL TIME! And if you disagree with me, well, you will be put on the LIST

Ok in reality one can debate which wrestling game is the best, but of recent years, this is really the best, and I am gonna break down why I want this game. Especially given that I own 2k15 and 2k16.

Today’s title brought to you by the The Iron Sheik. I think he can compete with Zandig, don't you?

I HEAR VOICES IN MY HEAD

First, I need to talk a little about my history with the WWE, Wrestling, and the games in general. I am an older gent (35 in may jesus christ) and I started watching wrassling during the Monday Night Wars. I grew up with Stone Cold Steve Austin, Hollywood Hulk Hogan, Macho Man, Ric Flair, The Rock, Mankind (Mick Foley is my fav of all time), the Undertaker, and so on. I have watched wrestling off and on throughout my life. Some other favorites are CM Punk, Austin Ares, Bobby Roode, Shinsuke Nakamura, Samoa Joe, Matt Hardy, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz (I liked him since I first saw him with Morrison), Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt, and plenty more. Suffice to say, I know my wrassling. Hell, I live in Orlando about 15 minutes away from the NXT Full Sail Arena!

I love wrestling. When I was a kid I used to dream of becoming a wrestler. Even had a persona all picked out (The Vice!) and stuff. Ah the dreams of childhood. Of course I am too much a fatass with too many health problems so whatever.

My first wrestling GAME was a PS1 title, WWF Smackdown. I remember making a clown wrestler who sounded like a southern preacher, it was hilarious. In fact, I have always loved the games. For years, however, I missed out simply because there were no PC versions of any of these games. I have always loved the games however, as they let me live out my childhood fantasies. Straight up wish fulfillment. I am not gonna hide it.

I got lucky 3 years ago, and got a PS3 (Bonus from work yay!) and WWE 2k14, and was hooked. Played that single game for hours and hours and hours, making a custom universe, tons of arenas and music and just all that jazz. When 2k15 came to the PC I had to have it, and I picked it up. I had fun with it, about 20 hours, but found the sheer lack of customization options, and small roster took most of the fun out of it. The MyCareer mode was also a bit boring, with a sever lack of interaction and repetition. I enjoyed my time with it for sure though. I ended up having to sell my PS3 due to car troubles a year ago though. Oh well. Also, before I got rid of my PS3 I managed to play Smackdwon vs Raw 2011, 2008, and a few other PS3 wrestling games as well. The best ones for me always had a career mode. I especially liked the one in SvR 2011 where your CAW got into a fued with Undertaker, and got messed with so hard by his mind games. Good stuff. I remember a moment where the game goes to white noise and I legit thought it broke, only for it to come back in some weird purple arena where I had to fight an endless stream of Druids. GOOD TIMES.

Then WWE 2k16 happened, and it was much improved! I played that for about 22 hours, played quite a bit in MyCareer mode, but ran into the same issue of repetition and lack of customization, although it was better than the previous year and I don’t regret my time with this at all. The big issue for both these games for me was the focus on "Showcase Mode" were you had all this focus on historical matches. This mode has existed since 2k14 and I didn't give a shit for these things. I wanted to play MY wrestler in matches, no replay Stone Cold vs The Rock, or anything involving Cena. I just didn't care. And dev time on these modes took away from what the fans really wanted: Universe Mode, and MyCareer. That’s where 2k17 comes in...

WE'RE HERE....DEATH!

So first and foremost, Showcase mode is GONE. THANK GOD! Instead, all the development was spent between Universe Mode and MyCareer, which is awesome. The two modes I care about.

MyCareer is a story about becoming a Paul Heyman guy this time, dealing with BROCK LESNER and such. Which is awesome, more interesting then say Hall of Fame in 2k16 or just becoming the Champ in 2k15. There is an expanded roster, and while some folks were lost (due to contract stuff like Ryback) the roster itself is overall improved. Yes, there is DLC (And if someone gifts me this game as a base I will buy the DLC on my own, I NEED AJ STYLES AND NAKAMURA!) the base roster is still damn improved! We get the Dudley Boys, the full Wyatt family with Strowman, Shane O Mac, all the variants of Mic Foley (my fav!) DDP, and more!

Further, they added a badass features called the PROMO ENGINE! In 2k16 you could do backstage interviews, which was fine, but you only ever had 4 canned responses, and it just messed with your stats and heel/face levels. It was voiced though, so that was nice. However, in 2k17 you get FULL PROMOS! No voice, but instead you get to do pre match, post match, backstage, and even mid show promos! You have to pander to the crowd, you can do face to face promos against your rival in the ring and face off and it’s just so deep! It has a massive amount of options too, since they didn’t have to worry about voicing any of it. These promos are in BOTH MyCareer AND Universe Mode, which is amazing!

Also, for the first time in years, they brought back the ability to create CUSTOM ENTRANCE VIDEOS! Now, they still wont allow for baseline custom entrance themes (those were last seen in 2k14) but on the PC you can mod those in. But now, you can create highlights of your characters matches, mid card graphics with uploaded logos and things, and then create your own damn Titantron video! For any Created Wrestler! They also added even more gear for making your wrestlers exactly the way you want, and you can again create Female CAWs (but not for MyCarrer mode, BOO!)

Universe Mode is even more improved. You now create full on shows, complete with intro Pyro (so you can have your own show pyro) and then you can customize the matches and even slot in Promos mid show. It feels more like an actual show! The flow is better, the commentary is also improved, but still not perfect (I dont think they ever will get this as perfect as it is in the NBA 2k games) and you can create custom arenas with even more options. AND YOU CAN FINALLY USE THOSE CUSTOM ARENAS ONLINE SO IF YOU PLAY AGAINST FRIENDS (like I have before, see here it’s my buddies vid, I am just one of the players) YOU CAN USE A BADASS CUSTOM ARENA! So damn cool. Also in that vid you can see my CAW Taurus. Remember, YOU MESS WITH THE BULL YOU GET TE HORNS BOYO! The DEMON HORNS (that’s his finisher, and his entrance theme is Black Swan by Story of a Year. Yes, I think of all this! He even has a submission finisher, the BULL BREAKER!)

Nevermind the gameplay improvements, like being able to choose the submission minigame style (I hate the circle system from 2k15 / 2k16 so I will switch back to the button mashing system), the improved visuals, the way they use the in game models during match cards for everyone instead of just the CAWs, and such and its just a better game. Honestly, if it had the custom entrance music without having to mod, I would daresay its the wrestling game I have been waiting for all this time. Its near perfect for me, and with the improvements I can see myself losing hours of free time to this.

Now something I forgot to mention the previous time I requested this is the fact that they re-added BACKSTAGE BRAWLING! That’s right, you can actually transition from the ring area to the backstage area during matches. If you move up the ramp to the entrance you will move into the first backstage area, the Gorilla Position. From there you can enter a hallway, and then enter a dressing room. Its pretty damn cool and in matches with no DQ / No Countout it adds a ton of options. There is also now CROWD BRAWLING! You can throw your opponents over the barricade and then take the fight into the crowd. Both these options are amazing, no joke.

Also a small thing, but Taunts are now context sensitive, and you can taunt while on the turnbuckle. This is just fun because you can climb up to do a sweet top rope move (like say, a Five Star Frog Splash) and before you do it, maybe do the DX Crotch Cut and then DIVE! I also forgot to mention that instead of canned “Victory Poses” after matches, there is now a CREATE A VICTORY option so you can have your CAW do some sort of crazy stuff at the end of a match. Basically, improvements all around!

Also the roster is stupid large with over 100 base wrestlers between legends and current stars, not including the DLC wrestlers available. Its amazing.

As a note, I wanna take Roman Reigns out to the backstage and just maul him. Because he annoys me. Him, and maybe Triple H as well. Yea. Those two need a good beating at the hands of the Taurus. They trying to run roughshod on this company for far too long! Maybe use a female wrestler and do the same to Steph McMahon. They all knew what they were signing up for!

This game is GLORIOUS!

It occurs to me, in my last attempts at requesting this game, that I talk about the features and why they excite me and improve on the game but not really why I want to play it in the first place. I realized this because I am an idiot.

So first of all, as I said there are 2 modes of gameplay for a solo player (which is what I do mostly). Universe Mode, and MyCareer mode. I would most likely spend the majority of my time early on in MyCareer mode, building Taurus, my CAW up from nothing in NXT all the way to challenging the Beast Incarnate BROCK LESNER! That’s the point of MyCareer mode to be honest, beating the Beast (I think. I haven’t spoiled MyCareer for myself so I know I become a Paul Heyman Guy but not what happens overall in the story). This appeals to me because its straight wish fulfillment. I get to perform sweet Promos, get into rivalries, chase belts, and all the cool things a superstar gets. Also, in 2k17, I have MERCH SALES! So my CAWs popularity directly impacts the amount of cash I make, meaning I need to put on excellent matches to earn fans and social media presence. I love the sim aspects of this, and its so much deeper then the last few games.

One new thing in MyCareer is that DLC characters do in fact show up in MyCareer mode! You might not understand why this is a big deal but let me explain. If you have, say, The Club or Nakamura installed from the DLC, or hell Austin Aries or Tye Dillinger, you can SEE THEM IN MY CAREER! They actually act in the mode. Previously this did not happen. This is huge. It means my dream of Tag Teaming with Nakamura in MyCareer COULD HAPPEN! HYPPPPEEEEEEEEE

Once I finish MyCareer, I would take my CAW, Taurus, and move into Universe Mode. Now, usually what I end up doing here is create my own custom rosters and shows. I take my favorite wrestlers (like Samoa Joe, AJ Styles, Nakamura, The Miz, Undertaker, ect) and create 2 show rosters. I then add some CAWs. Usually ones based on myself (Taurus) and my friends, and then basically play both GM and Superstar. Its again, wish fulfillment. The entire point is to pretend that I am in charge, and that the people I want to win, well, win! I tend to SIM most matches (This means let the computer decide who wins and loses) and I watch the Rivalry Matches cause those usually have the cutscenes. I would also watch the Promos (or control them) since that’s a feature now. I might even go so far as to create my own Federation. I have done this before (in 2k14).

I got so into doing that, that I created spreadsheets for the shows, listing out the members of each show, tag teams / stables, who had what belts at the start, who was a face or a heel, made sure I create custom entrances and songs for everyone (in 2k14 it was easy to do custom entrance music from mp3s) and all that. It was insane. And 2k17 is making me want to do that again. Just so I can watch my own fantasy wrestling. I even kinda sorta wanna stream myself playing it (both Universe and MyCareer) on my shitty youtube channel! And given that now you can do online feds with custom arenas I could theoretically have guest matches live on stream. That would be kinda wild. But its just a shower thought.

I am a sad man at times.

My Personal Favorite Matches Currently

Now, to add a little more fun to this post, I am gonna share some of my favorite matches in Wrestling. Just a couple though! I wanted to share just how much I enjoy the spectacle of wrestling! These matches exemplify the things in wrestling that I love. No joke.

  • Nakamura v Sami NXT Takeover Dallas: The first time I saw Nakamura, and it instantly made me a fan. I already liked Sami, but Christ man Nakamura has some unearthly charisma and style. And his entrance theme. MY GOD.
  • Undertaker vs Mankind HIAC – Ok seriously. Mic Foley, aka Mankind, aka Dude Love, aka Cactus Jack, is my all time favorite wrestler. Period. The dude does work, and his a genuinely nice guy. And Undertaker is my number 2 fav. And these two nearly KILLED EACH OTHER (Well mostly Foley). I mean, 2 staggering drops off a steel cage?! WHY FOLEY!? BAH GAWD HE WAS BROKEN IN HALF.
  • CMPunk vs Cena (Summer of Punk Win): After the infamous Pipe Bomb Promo, I still didn’t think Punk would win. I like Punk as a performer, the dude put in fucking WORK. But I never thought, knowing he was on his way out, that he would WIN! And TAKE THE BELT WITH HIM!
  • Kenny Omega vs 9 Year Old (JUST SILLY!): I like silly. Wrestling is, by its definition, silly. When I was searching out info on Kenny Omega, well, I ran into this. This little girl sells better than most WWE Performers I swear!
  • The Final Deletion: Dilapidated Boat FTW. Nuff Said.

Some of my favorite Promos

Let’s add another category. Promos are an important part of wrestling. It’s when the wrassler fires up the crowd, and gets em either cheering or booing for him/her. There have been tons of famous ones and here are a few of my favorites! Why am I showing you this? Because the Promo Engine will let me sorta kinda mimic these for the first time ever! That’s a BIG deal let me tell you! If there is one thing that has been missing from all the WWE games, its been the ability to do Promos.

  • [The Pimpbomb Promo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ms0DFxpptk) – Oh CM Punk you scamp! He got super real here, so real. It was nuts. He basically blasted the company he worked for hard, and you could feel the emotion. It was honestly amazing.

  • [The Miz DESTROYS Daniel Bryan](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8d4SLA4HYp0) – I have, again, always been a fan of the Miz. But many folks have not really enjoyed him, till this moment right here. He got seemingly legit furious at a comment made by Daniel and fucking verbally destroys him. It was amazing, and it completely changed the Miz.

  • [The Boogeyman Scares John Cena](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYJZYQaJRBQ) – Thanks [u/Joose2001](/u/Joose2001) for showing me this one cause holy shit this was silly fun. The boogeyman was a silly wrestler to begin with but this was both funny and creepy. John Cena’s expressions helped a great deal, and this shows how silly wrassling can be.

  • [Stone Cold Said So!]( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjWPoQWdmjg) – The moment Austin 3:16 became a thing. It started a career, really. I should not need to say more.

  • [Anything, just ANYTHING by Ric Flair](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixDgopL8xeU) – There is a reason my last requests title was a Ric Flair line. The dude was NUTS. And memorable on the mic.

Also, now I am not trying to promote my youtube channel, but if you wanna know how much I love wrestling in general? Well, I did a Vlog about that subject!.

HERE COMES THE MONEY!

Now of course, you might be saying to yourself "Clay, if you want this game so much, why are ya not buying it yourself!" well there is a simple reason for it. Honest to god, there are only 2 games right now that I care about.

This one. And Mass Effect Andromeda. And I have enough cash to get ONE but not both. And to be honest, ME Andromeda is the more expensive game, and if I have to choose one to buy I would prefer to get the more expensive one, simply because it would be easier to request the cheaper. Lets be real, its always going to be a matter of money. And I am not gonna lie, I could buy this one eventually. But ME Andromeda aint coming out till end of March, and 2k17 comes out Feb 7th.....so yea. And yes, I am aware that to get the full experience I would need the DLC (oh Nakamura you WILL be mine) but I can at least wait for that.

Anyway, thanks for reading this long ass nonsense, and hopefully one of you decides to grant me a bit of SWEET CHIN MUSIC for the 1 2 3! I think I got enough wrasslin references in there. I THINK.

10/15
