Surprise fry survived!
Started my planted community fish tank about 5 months ago and have had all my fish in there for about 3 months or so.
Tank conditions...
- 29 gallon
- Lights on at 9am, lights off at 8pm on automatic timer
- Aquaclear 50
- Powerhead for water agitation
- I also do not do water changes as much as I should... Its probably been about a month since the last one haha...
- Temp: 78F-80F
- pH: 7.7
- NH3: 0ppm
- Nitrite: 0ppm
- Nitrate: 30ppm~
Currently I have...
- 1 Albino Bristlenose Pleco
- 12 Serpea Tetra
- 2 Zebra Nerite
- 3 Mystery Snail
- 5ish Ghost Shrimp
- 8 Panda Cory Catfish
- and super surprising to me... 3 Panda Cory Catfish juveniles (That I have seen)
I noticed the fry when one swam past the front of the tank. He was very tiny at maybe 1/2cm in length. I was very surprised and quickly grabbed a flash light to look for more and found two others. It has been about a month or so since then and now they are all about half an inch in length and exploring the whole tank even when the lights are on. Its fantastic!
The Cory's were laying eggs all over the tank within 2-3 weeks of getting my initial 6 about 3~ months ago but I did not think that panda cory fry would survive in a community tank. I believe their survival was due to a few areas that were closed off enough that no other community member could get in - Notice the driftwood on the left side of the tank... it is right next to the glass and the roots from the large Anubias seems to provide extra cover as well. There is another piece of driftwood that provides similar cover but it is behind the Amazon Sword plant in the front middle of the tank.
Anyway thanks for reading! Thought I might share my discovery on the chance someone else might want to try breeding cories in a community tank.
