Starwood Gold -> Platinum

This may/may not be the right subreddit for this. but /churning didnt seem to make sense.

I have starwood/marriott gold from my Delta Amex account... To get to platinum - do I need to start from the beginning - or jus get the marginal stays (25?) to bridge the difference?
