My StableBit DrivePool Concerns.
A little background. I use DrivePool on one machine already for Media and I'm thinking about using DrivePool on another machine for more important data such as art projects files that are personal as well as for work. Also I would place my other personal documents, photos etc on this pool as well.
So basically one computer is for work, the other is for media (tv/movies).
So my concern is the problem often talked about which is, what happens when a drive fails in drivepool. My work computer's data is backed up on BackBlaze and partially locally to an external 5TB drive. I back up my art projects there.
Now lets say a drive fails in the pool, its going to be hard to tell which files are lost due to how drivepool works (files are scattered around the various drives in the pool). I know there is a powershell script but even that makes it kind of hard to restore from backblaze if I really have to because I would have to hunt down all those individual files in backblazes horrible online ui (sorry backblaze, I love ya). This doesn't seem fun or even practical.
So I'm thinking If I lost a drive, I would have to restore everything from backblaze or my local backup (which isnt a complete backup).
I'm not sure how to do deal with this. Part of me thinks its better to not pool the drives that way if I lose one, I know exactly what was on it and I can order from Backblaze to be delivered if needed. This is much easier solution than hunting for all the random files lost from the drivepool powershell script excell sheet.
I have two drivepool licenses but I haven't pulled the trigger and set it up yet on my personal/work computer due this problem.
I'm not sure what to do. I do find it far more appealing to pool the drives though but then there is that problem.
If I pooled the drives, I suppose I could keep the drive letters mounted and then in backblaze those drives would be listed by the same drive letters and then I could simply download that drive and all the "scattered" files would be replaced? But then I got to keep the drive letters mounted too. And backblaze would likely have a backup of the pool and the individual drives? Not sure how that works with deduplication.
I also have ACD so I could upload everything to ACD in folders that match the pool but that really doesnt address the problem but I have plenty of ways to backup the data online ... but restoring it all would be hell.
My Drives on the workstation are:
1TB Samsung SSD 3x4TB WD Reds 2x2TB WD Black 2x1TB Black
I want to pool the data with DrivePool but I'm not convinced it would be easy to restore missing data even if a single drive fails. This IMO is a big problem for DrivePool. While its great to pool everything... losing 1 disk = basically losing it all in a sense.
I'm not sure what to do.
BTW: I would like to see Stablebit address this design flaw. I'm not sure what can be done but It seems like a serious problem.
