I'll be taking over care for my moms betta in a few days, I have some questions

Help

Mom got George almost a week ago on Sunday, he's really pretty. She put him next to the toilet, in a clear flower vase with a bamboo stalk. She told me the other day that she didn't like him because he just sat there and didn't swim much. As silly as it sounds, I felt bad for the little thing, did some research and ordered a lot of stuff. I also noticed tonight that he's not as bright and pretty as when my mom first brought him home. I have some questions before all of the stuff gets here tomorrow.

I ordered a Fluval Spec V (5g), a heater, thermometer, tank pebbles, ornaments to swim through, silk leafy fake plants, 2 marimo balls, pebble vacuum, betta food, water conditioner.... and I think that's it. The tank comes with a filter (carbon and biomax). I know I should get a test kit, but I need to wait for my next paycheck (I already went WAY over budget for this week).

  1. Am I missing anything from my supplies list?

  2. When it comes time to transfer him to the larger tank, should I acclimate him using a plastic zip bag, and then pour the water in the bag (from the flower vase with week old water) into the clean, new water?

  3. Will the biomax portion of the filter, and the masimo balls be enough to combat the ammonia that builds up? (Again, I realize I need a test kit, I'll get one soon)

  4. how long after I add the water to the tank can I add masimo balls, and then George? (Keep in mind that he's currently in a stagnant flower vase, I would think anything is better than that)

I think that's it for now. I think he'll like his new home on my desk more than his flower vase by the toilet. Plus he'll get to cheer me on while I work on homework. Thanks in advance

TL:DR - mom got a betta less than a week ago. Isn't providing proper care. I feel bad. Splurged on a new pet. See questions 1-4
