LTA: ironic racism aka hipster racism

Given the controversy around PewDiePie and trying to defend his racist statements as irony, I thought it would be relevant to mention the discourse around ironic racism a.k.a. hipster racism.

Whatever variation of the term, it describes how privileged people, who may not be dyed in the wool racist, use racist jokes and mockery and then excuse them by saying they're joking or being ironic.

The problem with relying on irony to make racist statements is that it often invites true racists to say racist statements as well, then hide their motivations from the public behind "irony". Then they wink to a racist audience that knows they're not joking. For example, Richard Spencer and his ilk tried to excuse his "Hail Trump! Hail our people! Hail victory!" moment by saying he was being ironic
