Is there an Android hack that can take google photos and insert them into my received text photos?

I know this sounds really stupid and I could be way off base, but I'm confused as to what happened to my phone.

Earlier, my husband texted me and sent me a screenshot. Instead of the screenshot, a photo I had sent him a couple days ago came up. No matter what he sent, that photo kept coming up. We both deleted the message threads, we both deleted the photo from our phone and recent photos, but it still kept coming up. If he sent me multiple pictures at once, it would be multiple pictures from the same time frame.

He texted a photo to someone else and they didn't get the same photo that I did, they got the actual photo he sent. I assumed it meant the problem was on my end, and since those photos were in my Google Photos account, he thought my Google account might have been hacked and told me to change my password and factory reset my phone.

I did all those things, and the problem was fixed, but now I'm wondering if this was a weird issue with Google Photos, or if my phone was hacked somehow?

The photos were the most recent ones I had sent him, but were deleted from my phone and were no longer in my message thread. They weren't the most recent photos in Google Photo and were actually in my trash folder.

I did see an article about the Gooligan hack and did enter my email address and it said that I hadn't been hacked.

So maybe it was a google photos or a phone issue. But I just find it really odd that "sensitive" photos were the ones being sent to me over and over if the problem was on my end and I didn't have those photos saved on my phone anymore.

Any thoughts? As I said, I reset my phone, reset my google password, deleted any fishy apps that may have been on there.
