Song from around 2000, male singer who spoke most of the song, but the chorus was sang

It was likely a one-hit song on a pop station in Austin TX but sounded slightly country; the singer is in a bar and a girl comes in maybe, I think he talks about California.

The male singer had a fabulous voice and the chorus was gorgeous.

Sam Hunt's new song made me think of it

Thanks in advance!
