The toxicity of your Genji, of your Ge-enji

News & Discussion

I woke up this morning and decided to play a couple games before work. I don't get to do this often, or play really often. So I was excited to get in some fun time before going through the day.

In my first competitive match, I was teamed up with a group of three. Before the match even started they all three started questioning picks - Symmetra and Pharah on Gibraltar defense. Not just questioning but constant nagging to switch. I got a teleporter up right away that got destroyed after two uses before the first waypoint was taken. On my second death (with silver kills as Symmetra) I switched to a Zenyatta since our team had solo heals.

This entire time the group was complaining about the Pharah pick. And honestly, that player sucked. Not gonna lie, they just weren't very good, but their stats also indicated that they weren't particularly good at any one character. The complaints continued. And on and on.

Nobody was talking tactics, or strategy, out trying to coordinate any action, just complaining about the Pharah.

Then I chatted: "Stop talking shit, it's not changing anything, let's play around her and focus on winning."

Non starter. One of the goobers muted my chat. He was the most vocal source of negativity. For the next few minutes I tried to redirect the group to focus on gameplay instead of criticising someone who is obviously not responding to their negativity. And yet it persisted.

So I retaliated, the only way I knew how.

I switched to Torbjorn. When I died I switched to Widowmaker. Then Genji. Then Hanzo.

My question: did I pick the right throw characters or did I miss a better throw?

Seriously though, I love this game, and mostly have good experiences playing, but starting a game by vocally complaining and then proceeding to complain for the entire game is a new one to me. I mostly play on Xbox which has been mostly positive, and sometimes on PC, where this happened.

Is PC just incredibly toxic, or does it get better?

Also, for the tools who just immediately and loudly complain for the entire game, why do you do it? Why don't you just get better, instead of playing in low levels and being pissed that everyone sucks? Or why don't you go play a single player game that doesn't depend on teamwork?

Cheers and GG's to all
