What is actually IS the league of legends?

So whenever I think of the league of legends I think of something like a gladiator arena where different champions come to show off their skill. I'm sure I am incorrect but I am not sure where to find any lore about this or if it even exists. If not I would like to know your opinions on what you think the league of legends actually is and what the summoners rift is.
