Attempting to use 3 column layout for static front page, but widgets are at the bottom?

I am trying to figure out what may be going on...

I'm attempting to have a three column layout on a static front page... widgets on the left and right, and the main text content in the center.

When I choose three column, this is what occurs: https://i.imgur.com/zi1vU9B.png

It looks like it is placing the widgets on the left and right, but below the text.

Is this an issue with the theme, or is there a setting I am missing somewhere (or, how can I attempt to troubleshoot this)
