Local Spot Etiquette: What's yours?

Long story short: I was at my local secret spot (subspot really) surfing by myself. As a side note, I only go to this spot when the better beach break isn't working. When two older guys paddled up and flexed their "local" status, saying I could only "fly under the radar" aka get waves they didnt want. My question is how does your local spot/secret spot work? Like for OBSF, the sea god hands out the peaks so there really is no localism. But this is a point break, so there's some leftover bad vibers...
