What happened to vanilla? (x-post r/answers)

Used to be - at least when I was a kid in the late eighties early nineties... when my parents or family members would go to Peru they would bring back this delicious, thicker syrupy version of vanilla. I loved it and would throw it with some milk and cocoa in a blender for breakfast. Now my family can't seem to find it. What happened? Does it even still exist? Where can I get it?
