How to reinvigorate a love of reading?
I used to be a voracious reader. I was slightly behind the curve in initially learning how to read, but accelerated quickly once I did. In a very short space of time I went from childrens' books to adult ones. I think I was 10 when I got my first library card. I used to fill a box with books to check out, read every one from cover-to-cover, then return for another box-load. I used to borrow a mix of novels and textbooks; contemporary and classics. A little poetry, but mostly prose. I also often borrowed novels from my parents or other family members. Right through to the end of high school, reading would have been the #1 item on my 'list of things I do.'
I do not know why, but I completely lost this when I was a uni student. One day, I looked at the novel I was in the middle of and decided not to continue (I now cannot remember what book it was). I stopped reading textbooks that were not required for my course work and did not even consider picking up any new novels. That was probably 17 years ago, and I have read very few books in that period. I have tried a couple of times to respark the passion I once had, but keep failing to make it stick. I have tried browsing library shelves, reading well-reviewed textbooks on subjects I was interested in, picking up well-reviewed novels with subject matter I would have expected to appeal. Each time, I would read two or three books before I drift off again (often with a book still only half-read).
Does anyone here have any suggestions on how to reinvigorate the love of reading I used to have? Perhaps I just need to find the right book(s) and everything will fall back into place again? I used to range so wide, there are few genres or subjects I would not have at least tried, though I always found biographies dull.
