Help with Sally Ann (Clawhammer Medley)

Hi,

I hope this makes some sense:

I've been playing clawhammer since ~Christmas. I have no prior musical experience, and unfortunately have failed to locate a single clawhammer instructor in my area, so I've been learning through the How and Tao, Ignoramous and Peghead Nation's Evie Ladin (and any other bits and pieces of advice I can find online)

While I know I'm very, very green, I've been playing around a bit with Clawhammer Medley, the famous Steve Martin tune. And again, while I know I'm very new, I cant get Sally Ann to sound anything even remotely resembling what it should sound like when Steve (or other people online) are playing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJrx5C7KOKc this is another version I really like, if anyone has a tab link to this I would be grateful)

I'm wondering if I'm just straight up not understanding the specific technique for this song?

Steve Martin's Sally Ann, for example, just looks like really fast slides on the first string between 7-12 12-9 with some mixed in hammer ons and pull offs (I'm only talking about the first few measures). However, regardless of how much I practice this opening line, it sounds like crap and doesn't seem to actually resemble Sally Ann.

So anyway, any guidance here would be really appreciated, and while I know a month or two in I should not expect to be good at these songs, I'd love to just get the opening few measures of Sally Ann figured out.

Is there something that I'm missing here? Is it a matter of just being fast enough and smooth to make the slides, hammer on's and pull offs sound good? or am I missing some technique altogether?

Thanks in advance, and I just want to reiterate, I have 0 expectation to sound like Steve Martin after 2 months of playing, but I'd love to have Sally Ann at least sound like something that slightly resembles Sally Ann.
