Tips for getting off stool softeners?

I'm 22M.

I've been constipated since mid December and a month later the doctor prescribed me some laxatives and stool softeners. The laxitives I took for 5 days (per doctor's orders), and the stool softeners for 30 (as per doctor's orders), and I have a few questions.

So, tomorrow will be my last day on stool softeners after a month and I have some questions:

1. Will my bowels be automatically recovered or does it take some time?

2. I hear pro biotics help, how true is that?

3. Assuming things take time to get normal, how much time should I give it? and how long till i'd need to contact a doctor?
