PlinkUSA Selection Make Sense?
I've been eyeing a $300 24-bay SuperMicro server on eBay for when I have the cash. (Already have a rack.) But then another thread pointed me towards PlinkUSA which appears to just sell cases to build your own servers.
I already built my own server w/ a SuperMicro X8DTi-F motherboard in a Fractal Design Define XL R2 case. The world of backplanes et. al. still confuses me, I haven't had a lot of time to put in the research. But I already built this server for a render server that I no longer need.
Would it make more sense to just buy this enclosure from Plink, pop my hardware in, and run the drives directly to the mobo/expansion cards? It would be less slots, but I feel like I could expand my storage much more quickly for much cheaper doing this than buying full servers. And then I could more easily control fans (replace w/ noctuas), and so on..
Am I crazy? Am I missing something?
Server will just be home storage, Plex, etc. Nothing complicated. Running unRaid or plain Linux.
