[US][Checking] How do I write a check to myself and get cash for free?

I'm a BoA and Chase (credit cards) customer. I also have an investment account that offers free checks.

What's the deal with the teller fee for getting cash from a check at a different bank? Does that only apply to non-customers?

I'm sick of dealing with ATMs (free). How do I cash checks for free?
