I am not sure how I feel about la la land (spoilers)

SpoilerDiscussion

I watch the movie just a yesterday and I have mixed feelings about it. To start off with I have watched many musical movies from the classics like singing in the rain to the Disney made ones like high school musical.I even enjoyed beyond the sea by Kevin Spacey. And I don’t know how I feel about la la land. I mean the movie is beautiful and just stunning to look at but it just feels like something is missing. Subdued. Yes, that’s the word I am looking for. The movie feels very subdued. It start of with a very big opening number and just gradually made the scope of the movie smaller and smaller. From the opening dancing number on the highway with the full Broadway dance number to the cast is almost just down to Seb and Mia. I don’t know it just feel like the classics that I really liked before. There is just some feeling of grand musical feel that is missing. Then again maybe that is what they are going for. The man tap dancing scenes in the movie are not as impressive as they can be. (For me hardly anyone can measure up to Gene Kelly.)The dance numbers might not be to my liking but it could very well be what they are going for in the movie. In most movies when we see love it is exciting and big and grand with background full of people dancing as the main characters see each other through the dance hall.(something like that) But for Seb and Mia their love is literally the world fading out and it is just them left. We see this the first time Mia sees Seb plays the piano. The first time they tap dance and the when they dance in the skies. For them its not about showing their love to others it is just about them. And maybe that is why it feels empty(in a theatrical way). Like everyone in the world is gone and or does not matter there is only them. It’s really different from how these movies usually goes as there is no grand confess of love in front of a crowd. There is not lair exposed and a grand showcase of please give me another chance.(they do have the chase back trope)And even that is very subdued with only two of them there. No song. No rain. No grand speech. The ending is fine I guess but the whole movie is like that. It is just about the Seb and Mia. And I am not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand I really have never seen a musical just about two people. On the other hand maybe I am just so used to musical have to flashy and grand. So here are my thoughts. I think the movie is a solid 8/10. I only marked it down by 2 points because Ryan Gosling can’t sing to save his life. Emma stone can sing very well but I am just not a fan of Ryan Gosling’s voice.
