[Hiring] Part time IT Field Technicians for nonprofit support

Part Time Computer Technician Work for a nonprofit, make a difference

We're looking for a couple part-time computer technicians in Cook and Lake County. SBTC is a nonprofit organization that provides technology support to other nonprofits throughout the Chicagoland region. We work with many schools, churches, and other organizations, providing on-site technology support. We have multiple sites throughout Lake and County Counties that we'd love to have additional help for. Schools and parishes in the following communities: Deerfield Inverness Lake Forest Lake Villa Lake Zurich Libertyville Palatine Round Lake Wauconda Waukegan Chicago Oak Park River Forest Hickory Hills

So if you live in any of those places, or nearby locations, such as: Barrington Grayslake Gurnee Mundelein Vernon Hills

And you'd like to work with us on a part-time basis, please send us a resume, and ideally a cover letter. You can reply to this ad in PM if you prefer, or email cmiller@sbtcsupport.org, Carla is our HR Manager. PDFs are preferred. You're encouraged to send both documents as a single file. Some info about the position in general:

  1. Extremely reliable, fixed scheduling and hours. If you work 3 days per week, they'll always be the same 3 days, during the same time period.

  2. Daytime, work week schedule. On-site support is generally 9AM to 3:30PM, which just a little variability (+/- an hour) for a few sites.

  3. 3 to 4 days of work per week.

  4. Position is 18-24 hours per week.

  5. Rate is $14-$17/hour, depending on experience and demonstrated ability.

  6. Great environments, both on site and in the office. As a nonprofit, people work for us because they care, and want to be there, doing what they do. Imagine an office full of engaged, satisfied people, all working toward a similar goal. Likewise, the sites we support are nonprofits, so the customers are likewise engaged, satisfied people, generally making them much nicer and more pleasant than the average of corporate America.

  7. No micro-managing. You have a whole team to support you, but on site, you get to dig in and do the problem solving on your own. We care about providing good support and having happy clients, not how many TPS reports you fill out.

  8. Generally, you'll go right to your assigned site for the day, and not come to the office most days. We have an office in Des Plaines and another at 35th and lakeshore, but that's not going to be a frequent trip. Here's what you'll be doing:

  9. Responding to tickets from client sites. Ticketing system is web based, you can have a sense of what you'll be working on that day, before you leave the house.

  10. Providing "knowledge gap" support to end users, such as teachers and church office personnel. For instance, a user may not know how to set their print options to duplex, even though both machine and printer are working fine.

  11. Providing excellent customer service for these sites. Be personable, polite, professional. Be on time, and document everything in the ticket system.

  12. Support of desktops, laptops, tablets, Chromebooks, printers, interactive boards and projectors, and associated software and tools. Basic network knowledge (assign and change static IPs, join and modify wireless networks, troubleshooting of connectivity issues wired or wireless).

  13. You will NOT be doing any selling. We're a nonprofit, we don't have a need or desire to sell clients extra stuff. This is as close to "pure" technical, systems engineering work as you're likely to see.

Here's what you need to know:

  1. Several years of experience in computer support is strongly preferred. Nonprofit / education experience is awesome.

  2. You don't have to have a college degree in the field(current college students encouraged to apply, as are second-career folks interested in IT). But if you don't have a degree, you should have a couple certifications to demonstrate knowledge, or be able to clearly demonstrate that knowledge with little help. You can be self-taught, but we'll ask you to prove you know your stuff.

  3. Windows platform, defnitely. Mac platform, definitely helpful. Chrome OS, definitely. IOS, definitely. Server stuff is helpful, but we have a network management team to help with that.

  4. We don't really care if you know 5 programming languages. That's awesome, but this isn't a coding or development job. Nor is it likely to become one. Here's what you need to have (or not have):

  5. You must have a car, motorcycle, or other reliable transportation. Public transit isn't enough, some of these sites are not easily accessible from transit.

  6. While we appreciate people's willingness to commute, please don't apply if you live in Indiana, or Peoria, or anywhere else 2+ hours away. That's not fair to you, and not likely to ensure that we can provide good support to these sites.

  7. Background checks are mandatory. You're going to very likely be working in schools near minors, the standards are high for having a clean record.
