First time buyer - New or used to get best value in the long term

I'm a college student and my inherited 1986 Camry seems to be on it's final legs, and so I will be needing a new car in the near future. I have searched the subreddit for posts talking about whether to buy new or used and I still am unsure. I was hoping to get some advice based on my specific situation which I will lay out now.

  • budget is around $17,000 for new, but I'd like to pay less if I got a used car so I can spend the money elsewhere

  • I live in Arizona so it'd be nice to have a car with working AC before it starts getting warm (spring)

  • looking at Toyotas and Hondas because of their reliability, I plan to keep this car a while

Currently I am looking at the 2017 Toyota Corolla which I like because of it's good mileage and safety features. It seems like all new cars have an infotainment system as well as auto-breaking and other similar features that I value, as I want to keep this car for a while and don't want it to be out of date from the get-go.

I am leaning toward buying new because I like the idea of being the sole owner so I can keep track of all maintenance the car receives and how it's handled, and I don't mind paying a little extra for that. On the other hand, I don't want to be spending $17,000 on a new car when I could spend $10,000 on a used and get the same features (minus it being used and having mileage on it.) Thanks for the help!
