Is Slack for me?

Slack seems to be very widely used in the technology/media/filmmaking industry, which I am a part of. I want to be able to participate in others' Slack communities, but no team of people in particular. Specifically, a podcast I listen to has a Slack group that I'd like to be a part of.

Can a single person sign up for Slack to use it in this way? I know next to nothing about the service, and don't really know if it is what I think it is. I tried to sign up, but they want information about my "company" or "team", of which I have none. Please advise! Am I trying to use the service incorrectly?
