Graduated and licensed over two years ago. Still can't get a job.
I'm in a terrible, near suicidal state. In fact I almost called a hotline tonight. Apologies for the shitty formatting. So here goes...
I've been an RN with an associates for over two years. The summer after I graduated I was sexually assaulted and needed time to get through that. Somehow I managed to take and pass the NCLEX later that year. I have applied to many, many jobs in my area and I hardly ever get a response. In the 2+ years of job searching I have had 1 interview. I was told there would be a second interview but then got a rejection email the week it was supposed to happen. I'm seriously considering going back to school for a completely different degree or just saying fuck it and dropping off the face of the earth. I've even applied to retail jobs with no success.
Reasons I think I'm not going anywhere:
-
before starting nursing school, I had huge gaps in employment that I can't explain short of saying that I was lazy in my 20's.
-
besides my clinicals, I have no health care experience.
-
I have managed to only get one nursing professor to write me a letter of recommendation (the other one I asked basically ghosted me after saying she would write one in an email).
-
I am in a competitive area of the country (USA).
-
I haven't worked at all since graduating (been living with family)
-
I don't know any of my old classmates well enough to dare ask them to put in a good word for me where they work.
Pros:
- I am bilingual (English & Spanish) though no one seems to care.
Other things to consider:
-
Most of my old classmates got jobs within a year of graduation. Some of them were just as sketchy looking in paper as me but still managed to get jobs. However some were lucky enough to have a friend/relative hook them up.
-
I do plan to get my BSN online this year and I'm hoping that saying I'm a recent grad from that point on won't be as bad as saying I graduated over 2 years ago now.
-
My license is unencumbered.
-
I can pass a drug test/criminal background check
-
Since it's been so long since nursing school, I am no longer confident in my skills and could probably only work at a clinic at this point.
I have lurked around this sub for years now and it has taken me damn near a year to work up the courage to even post this to ask for help. I've had several friends (including one who works in HR) look over my resume. I honestly don't know what to do anymore. I worked so hard through all my pre-requisites as well as nursing school. It took me about 5 years to get my ADN when all was said and done and now it looks like it was all for nothing. Not even sure McDonald's would hire me right now. That's how bad I believe my lack of employment history is. I know I've fucked up. I want to turn things around but am clueless as to how to do so. What am I doing wrong? Just, someone help please!!!
EDIT: Thank you to all who replied! It's nice to not feel alone. I'll keep trying and will take action on some of the suggestions given.
