"Catholic witch" Ash Wednesday observance?

I consider myself a sort of Catholic witch: I was raised Catholic and I have a strong attachment to Catholic rituals, saints, the Virgin Mary, etc. However, I hate the Church's politics. I do still occasionally attend Mass, but I have recently (in the past year) started practicing ritual magic on my own.

Does anyone else here come from a Catholic background and still cling to some of the ritual aspects?

So, Ash Wednesday is one of my favorite Catholic holy days; I love the reminder of our mortality and the fact that we come from the earth and will return to it. I almost always go to an ashes service on this day, and plan to do so this year as well. But I would also like to do my own magic ritual to observe the holy day in my own witchy way.

Has anyone else ever done this? Any ideas?
