Need help finishing a recipe. Tentative name for the cocktail is "Battle of Stamford Bridge"

EDIT: Title should read Battle of Falkirk - and yes I know that actual battle probably didn't have the irish at it, but in the movie...

So a buddy I was chatting with overheard someone earnestly describing a cocktail that was bourbon and whiskey - which got us to thinking about whether there was a plausible, delicious cocktail that had a good reason to have two different whiskeys in it.

This is what we came up with, but it is imperfect, and I need help to take it to the next level if such is possible without turning it into an old fashioned.

The Battle of Falkirk

  • 1 part Scotch
  • 1 part Irish Whiskey
  • bitters
  • a splash of cherry juice/grenadine
  • a couple of cherries, muddled
  • a splash of soda water
  • served over Ice

Using Scotch and Irish whiskey makes sense in that the battle (in Bravehart at least) was fought with soldiers from both countries. I suppose the cherries and juice could represent blood and guts.

The problem is... it is totally drinkable, but not worth serving in lieu of an old fashioned, except to a bunch of Braveheart re-enactors I suppose. So I'm hoping to get the assistance of the esteemed commentariat here at r/cocktails.

The first thing I was thinking of changing out would be the bitters for orange bitters, but then you're entering old-fashioned territory. Worcestershire sauce might make an interesting addition (plus it could represent the English), but beyond that I'm at a loss...

Can you help me turn something adequate into something worth drinking?
