Do you think we have super-hearing

Everywhere I look it says the tensor tympani muscle is used as a protective muscle for the ear drum during instances of loud noises. What I'm wondering is if our ability to voluntarily do this gives us unique noise cancelling abilities... or, perhaps our increased control of the tensor tympani is a byproduct of superior hearing, such that mild sounds to others may sound loud to us... thoughts?
