Setting a static IP address (within a VM)

I'm currently following this course
https://app.pluralsight.com/library/courses/windows-server-2008-active-directory-pt1/table-of-contents

Learning active directory but coincidentally learning how to set up Windows Server 2008, and Virtual Machines. Eventually, this moves on to setting up an enterprise network for a fictitious company with locations across the country.

The Issue

I am setting up a domain controller using Windows Server 2008 via VMware Workstation Player. The Tutor advises to set the servers IP statically. So I follow his example, my actual default gateway IP is 192.168.0.1(the actual computer I'm running the VM on), he sets his IP to 192.168.10.201, and his default gateway is 192.168.10.1. So I follow suit and set my IP to 192.168.0.201 to reflect my actual gateway IP.

No bueno, no connection to the internet form within the VM. Using DHCP works and I can get internet.

I set the IP back to DHCP, find what IP it's using and it gives me 192.168.128.X, and the default gateway is 192.168.128.1. So I try the same process again, swapping the 0 for 128.

Still no internet connectivity.

Any tutorials I've found don't go into any further detail than what I've done. Any suggestions? Again, this whole thing is a learning process, I don't work in IT, just learning.
