Pokemon instantly getting caught?

I just encountered a charmander. Dropped a raspberry and used a great ball. When the ball landed, the shaking animation was initiated half way through one shake and the charmander was caught. Is this a new game mechanic or did my game glitch? Has anyone else encounter this?
