Is it possible to use my default SMS messenger on my phone and not get notifications from Voice for texts/SMS (i only want notifications for voicemail)?

I just want to use the stock android app for SMS but it doesnt seem like its possible to do with GV enabled. I still want GV to save my text/SMS messages but i dont want to actually use the GV app when sending or receiving SMS
