My partner thinks we should find investors. I think we should learn to program. What should we do?
TL / DR: We were in college or grad school for the last 5 years but, tried to find coders to no avail. This past year, we focused on learning to program ourselves but, my cofounder gave up. He wants to focus on finding investors to get coders to build site. I want to continue learning to code but he's not patient enough to see it through.
My co-founder and I have been trying to launch a startup for the past 6 years. We've cycled through 4 different ideas during this time. Now, in all honesty, we were in college for 4 of these years. Our focus was split between school work, jobs, trying to find careers and working part-time on our idea. Basically, we had too many other obligations to be committed. We weren't committed. Then after we graduated, for a year, my cofounder went to grad school and I felt the pressure to find a job to pay bills so that deterred us further.
That brings us up to now. In the last 10 months, I came to the realization that we need to learn how to program ourselves. I've signed up for a coding bootcamp and will be going in a few weeks. No matter how much I try to drill this into my partner's head, he just doesn't get it. Over the last 6 years, we've tried to reach out to multiple programmers to no avail. Networked. Met with many of them, wined and dined them. And no one bit. Because we didn't have any real money to give to anybody and professional programmers don't give a crap about sweat equity. So I was able to convince him for a short amount of time of learning to code ourselves. For about 6 months, we saw eye to eye on the matter and we were making progress and then my cofounder went back to saying we needed to find someone. He thought that he could pick up programming in a summer and learn enough to code up a large project (his words) and grew frustrated when I knew it would take the better part of a year.
Now he wants to create a slide deck to pitch investors in the hopes that one will give us money to hire programmers to build our site and I don't see the point in doing it. I just don't think angel investors are gonna hand over actual money when we have no MVP and nothing to showcase our ability to execute. I think all of our focus should be a complete tunnel vision towards figuring out how to build and if we had had that tunnel vision back in college instead of trying to find ways to go around the problem, we would have been professional level developers by now with the ability to build anything. I just think its a waste of time and I don't know if I'm being unreasonable. Our understanding at this point is I'm going to keep programming and he's going to keep working on slide decks and finding investors (because he thinks learning to program is a waste). For 6 months out of 6 years, we focused on learning programming. That's it. Every time I think back on it, I think that if we had just said "fuck it, we're going to learn to program" back in 2012, we would be professional level developers by now and that's why I've been teaching myself every day for the past 10 months but, my partner just doesn't seem to see it that way.
