Dipping my toe into having a project car. What should I expect?

Hi everyone. I recently have been wanting a project car that I can learn to work on but also have a great time driving and learn stick on. I do not have any previous experience working on cars at all. Only changed my oil a few times. I have heard that a Miata is one of the best cars to learn how to drive stick and work on because there is an answer for almost every problem. I'm not really sure what to expect if do get one. How many miles is too much for a Miata? Price wise what should I expect in repairs and parts that I would add for a better driving experience? Thanks In advance for any advice or pointers

Edit: Also I'm 18 and will be attending college next year locally and garage space should not be a problem
