What are the opinions on veneers??

I've never been happy with my teeth. I'm 21 and I never smile because of this. The dentists has mentioned veneers and I'm wondering the opinion on them? Also, any advice? Or any other methods instead of getting veneers. I know it's pretty pricey but I might bite the bullet if I have to. I would rather get my teeth fixed while I'm still young. Thanks for the help!
