Missed class due to depression - How to approach professor?
Recently I missed a week of college classes. I was having flashbacks to a traumatic event & in a general mood dip, so I was having trouble getting out of bed. I didn't follow along with homework, classwork, or studying, and I didn't do a very good job of communicating with my profs during this time (told them I was sick on Monday, nothing else after that). Now, I'm trying to get back on the wagon, but I don't know what to say to my professors. I haven't missed any class before this week and I've been a great student otherwise.
At a different college, a professor did not respond well to my mental health problems. They basically said, "that shit is made up and you need to snap out of it." Obviously that didn't help my situation or my relationship with the professor so I'd like to not repeat that if possible.
I'm not worried about catching up on the work - my courseload is pretty light - but one of my profs offered to write me a letter of recommendation and I feel like I've bungled that. I feel like I should be honest with that prof, but I don't know how much is appropriate. Do I tell that prof about my mental health situation? If so, how vague or specific should I be?
EDIT: I think this prof would not treat my mental health like it's made up. We have a nice, professional relationship. They are very open and empathetic.
