Why Sloth talisman is bad for the game, even if it is mostly single player
I see a lot of people defending the Sloth talisman by saying "Well, the game is single player, why do you care how someone else plays it?" or comparing it to a cheat code or cheese strat. I'd like to make a few points about those particular statements:
-
Sloth is not the same as a cheat code or cheese strategy because it is an official part of the game presented to all players. This means the game can and will be trivialized by a huge amount of players. This greatly undermines one of the key aspects of this genre of games: challenge. There's a reason this game, as well as Souls games, do not offer a difficulty setting. The game is meant to be challenging for all players. Every other aspect of the game clearly supports this idea, and Sloth is the only exception. This clearly demonstrates that the power of Sloth is a mistake.
-
The fact that it exists and is far better than anything else affects every player negatively. Again, in a game as challenging as this, most players are going to want to become as powerful as possible. Clearly, if you want to be the best, you need Sloth talisman. This goes directly against the design of the skill trees and the freedom they give you to choose anything you want. Not only that, but you have to purposefully choose to ignore it if you don't want to cheese the rest of the game. Forcing the player to ignore a part of the game to enjoy the rest of it is ALWAYS bad design. I don't ever want to gimp my character on purpose when I play games, but in Nioh, the game forces me to if I want to keep having fun.
-
And lastly, as a result of undermining the core challenge, Sloth turns "beating Nioh" from an achievement to something anyone can do. It doesn't matter if you struggled and died hundreds of times to do it, because someone else just cast Sloth talisman a bunch. You can say that this is a selfish complaint, but any challenging game is ultimately designed as such to result in the satisfaction of victory. That's the reward you receive for struggling against these tough enemies and bosses, and it's completely undercut by Sloth. It's like completing a marathon in record time, but then at the very end, someone else on a motorcycle crosses the finish line at the same time and their finish counts just as much as yours. Not actually very satisfying then, is it?
And just to be clear, if you are okay with Sloth talisman, you would also be okay with things like: an easy difficulty setting, a super strong weapon class that outclasses all other weapons, an in game cheat code menu, a button that plays the game for you if you hold it down, etc. Because "you don't have to use them, it doesn't affect you and adds more play styles." So if you disagree, at least be consistent and say that literally any and all broken shit that they could think of could be added to the game and it would be fine with you. If any of those things (or worse) would bother you, then your argument is not consistent and not valid.
Edit: Also, I like this hypothetical Nioh player who enjoys easy casual playthroughs that everyone brings up in defense of Sloth. He likes his games to be relaxing, so naturally he picks up Nioh and not the hundreds of other games better suited to his tastes. Don't tell him how to enjoy games!
