Just thought Fire Emblem fans had some thoughts on other strategy games, and I was wondering what people thought of how Ogre Battle stacks up against it.
Ogre Battle 64 is one of the better N64 titles out there if you're into RPGs. I personally like Fire Emblem better, but given that Fire Emblem wasn't a thing in North America back in October of 2000, Ogre and FF Tactics were the best in town.
Fair enough. I guess the connection to FE just seemed a little ambiguous at first. FE does a lot of things differently from your token RPG, so you don't often see people on here comparing FE to other games. It's a neat perspective though, I wish I knew enough to really contribute.
Sorry, I should have mentioned that Ogre Battle is also a SRPG.
To give you a little idea of how the game plays: you have units that move around the map freely rather than on a grid. Unit speeds vary according to whatever your game speed is and terrain factors and other factors which I don't fully understand. When opposing units meet up with each other they engage and automatically fight.
What makes unit engagements different from Fire Emblem is that each unit is made up of several characters in a formation and units will attack automatically based on what you have set their battle strategy as.
Each character in a unit can be a different class and can be placed differently according to your own desires. Each unit will have a leader (unique, story important units show up as leaders of new units) that will represent the unit on the map screen.
Leveling up and some lighter RPG elements are included for each character. Reclassing is based on having the equipment for the character. Permadeath isn't really a thing, resurrection is a mechanic.
It's pretty great! It's one of the most memorable SRPGs I've played, I've just never had the stamina to get all the way through it.
Uh... cool? I guess?

Ogre Battle 64 has a killer soundtrack, too.

Neat! I may have to try it out sometime.
