Some things need fixes.

Shattered defeat taking me to the other end of the world if my country is big enough, while my enemies have the luxury of moving over a tile.

Starting battles with half of my maximum morale. I checked the numbers. Wtf is this ?
Just lost what was supposed to be an easy war and I'm venting, obviously.

manual retreat to a closer friendly province so the AI doesn't determine where you retreat to. AFAIK, the AI will send shattered army to the closest safe zone, if you have any, which is usually near your forts.
The enemy has double your morale so your morale bar is halved instead of full. Your morale is still the same. Working as intended, as morale damage is calculated based on opponent's max morale.
That's the thing about the morale though, I'm reading that it's supposed to be somewhere around 4.xx , when the battle starts, it starts as 2.xx. Can't be that huge a difference when he is only 2 levels ahead in weapons, can it ?
And thanks for the first tip, I did not consider that.
Depends on prestige, event, tech, idea, power projection, military tradition, and national idea. Prestige is +-10%, defensive idea gives 15%, national idea gives another 10~20%, some events will further boost another 15%, power projection up to 10%, MT up to 25%. Not to mention defender of faith, crusade, and morale advisor.
Also MIL tech concerning morale boost can be huge. Going from 2/3/14 MIL to 3/4/15 is a change from 2/2.5/3 morale into 2.5/3/4. A whopping 25%/25%/33% increase.
Meaning a nation with MIL 15 only needs to have 50% bonus to have double the morale than a MIL 14 nation with no morale bonus.
I'm Kongo, the enemy is mutapa, I'm lvl 9 mil, they are 11 I can't see how they could be that far ahead of me... oh well. I'll probably end up restarting and going again. My offensive mil ideas are maxed out, other techs are similar.
Edit: my prestige is about 50 points higher.
Translated this means they are about 20-30 years of military technology ahead of you. That's huge, obviously. That'd be huge in real life too.
Check your morale difference in fights. 3.2 is much lower than 3.8. It doesn't look like it is, but it really makes that much of a difference. If you see your morale depleted by half as soon as you enter battle, you're behind on morale and you need to fix that ASAP.
