Letter probably glowed in the dark.
Today is a very busy news day. I feel mildly exhausted even though I've done practically nothing but go fetch the mail. Fuck.
At least it's not a Friday for once.
Seems like it hasn't been a Friday for a couple months now. :(
Komrade scientist, you know what happens to those to oppose Mother Russia. Polonium-210 is very bad for health. You have been warned.
Bombshell? I think so.
Alfa Bank is a major Russian bank whose computer server activity is being investigated by the FBI
I would say so.
Can someone pleas give me a tl;dr? I've read too many articles today.
tl;dr: Russian bank sends threatening letter to computer scientist who called for Trump investigation
Alfa Bank is threatening to sue a computer scientest for analyzing DNS lookups that Alfa Bank servers made for Trump servers. Well, more specifically, they are threatening to sue the computer scientist for calling for a formal investigation into possible communication/coordination related to those DNS lookups.
This is what happened > Technical analysis of Trump's secret server story
You'll probably be accused of being a Russian shill for linking this, but it's true. Just about everyone who has looked at this data has concluded it's just email marketing.
If people don't understand the technical analysis, here's WaPo
That secret Trump-Russia email server link is likely neither secret nor a Trump-Russia link
Or NYTimes:
Investigating Donald Trump, F.B.I. Sees No Clear Link to Russia
I did this analysis and I am not a shill. I think there are many ties between this administration and Russia that must to be investigated and possibly prosecuted. Just this server is not a tie and claiming otherwise is muddying the waters and giving bad name to reporting and media.
It's quite thorough and well-reasoned. I wonder if this is one of the Russia-Trump topics that Comey referred to during the hearing on Monday as being reported incorrectly by the media.
It would be more convincing if they explained why Alfa bank was responsible for 80 percent of queries for the Trump server and the rest came from a company linked to Betsy DeVos.
They did, actually. They almost immediately hired a highly respected American cybersecurity company -- one of the firms that concluded the Russians hacked the DNC -- who concluded it was triggered by marketing email. Almost everyone who's looked at the data says it's marketing email.
This story is back in the news because it's what eventually led to Trump's "wire tapp" claims, but it's just a distraction from the real Trump-Russia ties
Hey this is great!
This part still doesn't add up to me - the traffic in summer 2016 could have been generated by marketing emails, but the marketing company stopped sending these emails on trumpco's behalf in March 2016. I guess trumpco could have taken over day-to-day spam ops, but no one has a marketing email from this timeframe.
I guess it could be some URL scanning software that's doing a daily scan of all quarantined mail, even if the messages aren't new, but this still seems odd.
The claim that only txt and cname records can be used for DNS tunneling doesn't seem correct, since I think data can be encoded as a subdomain in an A record. Would this DNS lookup traffic be recorded if one had already looked up the Trump email server?
Yes, DNS tunneling type via subdomain would show up as long random looking subdomains like V2lyZS1jb25maXJtZWQta2lzc2VzLXRvLURvbm55.trump-email.com (the data is contained in encoded in the subdomain part) not always same mail1.trump-email.com like in the logs.
The lookups on emails that have been long delivered can be used by many different reasons and each of the companies that had them possibly had their own scenario. The reasons, quoting the article, can be - misconfigurations or glitches on email and mail filtering services, security appliances performing automated or search triggered lookups (DNS lookups on existing blacklists etc.), anti-spam mailbox store rescans, and endpoint level anti-spam products. For example, anti-spam systems are known to try to resolve and lookup every IP address and DNS name in the email message header, which can sometimes trigger unintended unsubscribe actions.
